How Many Times Should I Change Baby’s Diapers?

Writer:MAKUKURelease time:2022-09-14

A significant responsibility of parents is to ensure their little ones hygiene. Seems difficult at first, right? But first-time parents must be careful in caring for their baby’s skin because it is still delicate and easily irritated. Let's talk about how often parents need to do the diaper-changing ritual in order to maintain the baby’s proper hygiene.

Diapers should be normally changed every 2-3 hours. A newborn will normally go through around 12 diapers every day. This number drops gradually as your infant develops into the toddler stage. Never leave your baby's diaper on for more than a few hours, and only change when the diaper feels wet or with poop. Allowing your baby’s bum to get drenched in the diaper for an extended period of time should be avoided to prevent allergic skin reactions or rashes. Factors like these might temporarily increase the number of diaper changes your baby requires. If your newborn poops, the diaper should be changed right away, and the baby should be cleansed before putting on a new diaper every time.

Diapers are one of the most substantial expenses associated with having a baby due to the frequency of changing diapers. Many parents prefer not to waste a clean diaper, therefore they do diaper checks to ensure that a diaper change is required before removing and discarding it. Experts advise against waiting to change your baby's diaper and observe your baby's bowel movement as early as possible. It is preferable not to delay your baby's diaper change.

When to Change a Baby Diaper?

Diapers holding an amount of urine will bulge, and diapers containing poop will release that distinct smell. Before you jump into actually changing your baby’s diaper, it’s wise to wash your hands. This step is often overlooked, yet an important step for keeping your baby healthy. Apply a generous amount of baby skin-friendly soap or baby wipes to gently clean any areas of your baby that have come into contact with a moderate amount of urine or any contact with feces. Afterward, dispose of all the dirty products properly in the diaper bin. Babies and parents develop a routine over a period of time as parents learn when to change diapers. Parents eventually become used to these cues or signals. When a baby has a bowel movement, they may produce a characteristic facial expression, and infants may cry if their diaper is filled. Babies with particularly sensitive skin may not tolerate even slightly moist diapers and may require more frequent diaper changes.

Changing baby diapers depends on the age of your baby

Did you know that the frequency of changing diapers is also determined by the baby's age? Here are some must-know for first-time parents:

  • From newborn to 1 month: Elimination of waste is more often. Ideally, an infant takes a dump 5-12 times each day, and their waste is more of a sappy form, depending on how much milk they consume. As a result, they must be changed often, every time your infant takes a dump. Babies frequently take a dump while eating or after they have finished eating.
  • 1 month and older: Taking a dump starts to decrease. The infant may take a dump less often, maybe 6-8 times per day. The feeding or milk intake of your baby determines its regularity and volume of it.
  • 12 months and older: The frequency of taking a dump begins to resemble adults.

Based on the list, it is noticeable that the amount of waste dumped will decrease as the age increases. When the infant is younger, it can be frustrating to keep up with diaper changing, especially if there’s a poop involved and cleaning but will have less work to do when the baby grows. This practice can also be a special time for bonding and helps firm the bond between newborn and parents.
